After a frustrating night trying to figure out how to encode, then embed a Adobe Flash video into a Web site, I ran out of time and went the comfortable Apple Quicktime Pro route. I posted this video featuring Jayme Barrett serving as spokesperson for Society of American Florists' (SAF) new Vitamin F (as in Flowers) public relations program. This video is now prominently featured on SAF's consumer-based Web site http://www.aboutflowers.com. It took me only 30 minutes!
I know I should have more patience with Flash considering it's become a de facto standard for streaming Web video. I am sure when I have a few hours to spare, I shall figure it out considering I shelled out more than $1000 for the CS3 suite. But back to Quicktime Pro. Again, super easy and cost effective considering I spent about $40 for the upgrade from the regular Quicktime installed on my Mac.
All you do is open the MOV file, go to File, click Export to Web. It gives you options to export various versions for iPhone 3G, the older iPhone and Desktop, which I chose. Quicktime Pro even allows you to move where ever in the video and pause it to grab a video screen capture that serves as the JPG on your Web site. Then, you click Export. Check out the screen cap to the right.
It took about five minutes to encode the video which was about a 70 megabyte MOV file. Not bad for a Macbook Pro with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 chip I guess. Once it finishes, it gives you AWESOME and EASY instructions on where to place your files and embed the code. I uploaded all the materials to SAF's subdomain http://video.safnow.org/vitaminf. If you click on that link, you'll see a listing of all the files. All the instructions are found in the file in the same directory at http://video.safnow.org/vitaminf/ReadMe.html
It'll be interesting to see the feedback on whether posting it in Quicktime will pose a challenge as oppose to Flash. I didn't have time to check out any marketshare figures but will get back to figuring out posting a Flash version shortly. Now onto YouTube.
